GET ALL YOUR ANSWERS WITH GURUJI

Q:  I end up meeting the wrong people in my life. How can I solve this problem?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
It’s okay if you are meeting wrong people, they are waiting for you to make them right! What is important is that you should not become wrong. They are coming to you like sick people coming to a doctor. Just remember that you are the doctor and they are the patients. Instead of you joining their club, pull them toward you.

Q: How can a person become a better meditator?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: See, there is no better or worse meditator. Just be in the present moment and be happy. Instead of continuously thinking, 'What can I get?' Think about, 'How can I contribute? How can I be useful for the society?'
There is a certain joy in getting. We often want that others should love and respect us and should always admire us. You should just drop all this and throw it out. Come out of this and think 'What can I do to contribute?' Then you will be happy and your meditation will also be deeper. Life becomes sweet and richer.
There is a joy in getting things. But joy also lies in giving. Have you seen your grandparents? Their joy lies in sharing more with their children and others around. A mother cooks so many different dishes for her children when they return home. Her joy is in feeding everyone. That is a more mature joy.
Somewhere in life we have to grow and evolve from the joy we get from grabbing and getting, to the joy of sharing and giving – which is that motherly joy, or grandmotherly joy. That is a more mature kind of joy.

Q: Dear Guruji, what is your special message for Ugadi (New Year)?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Happy Ugadi! Happy New Year! People eat neem leaves and sweets on Ugadi to remind themselves that life is a mixture of both – the bitter and the sweet.

Antarmukhi, sadasukhi: When one is centered, then there is happiness always. This New Year will be good. It will always be good, always evolutionary for thedevotee – whatever the time and the prediction. It is time to move to a higher dimension. Whatever happens is for the good. Chant Om Namah Shivay.

Meditation is important. Even if one percent of you all meditate, it helps the remaining 99 percent of the population. This year everyone has to meditate and do satsang. The rest of the population will thrive on your spirituality. This year keep your spiritual goal. The material goals can be kept aside. Meditate, do satsang, read knowledge sheets. By doing that, you are helping others who have a hard time.
Wishing You All a Happy Ugadi | Gudi Padwa | Cheti Chand.

DAILY SUTRA

It is time for us to encourage our children to learn music and spend time in doing service to the society, and to develop a scientific temper while also pursuing spiritual and dharmic knowledge. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

GET ALL YOUR ANSWERS WITH GURUJI

Q: It is said that during the time of Lord Rama, India used to be so technologically advanced that there were aeroplanes. Is it true?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Well all that we have found is an old manuscript by a Rishi called Bharadwaj, the 'Bharadwaja Vaimanic Shastra'. The Science department has taken the book and published it in English as well. So they have mentioned how through solar power it was possible to fly. More than that we don't know. We find some diagrams, some indication to this. And one thing for sure that is documented, one Mr.Shastri, from India went to Mumbai and with the help of a Parsi businessman, flew the first plane several years before Wright brothers. But the world knows the Wright brothers as the first to fly a plane, which is not correct, because this was printed in the English newspaper, in London, that two Indian people have flown a plane for fifteen minutes on Chowpatty beach, in Mumbai. This is documented. But what the British did is, put the two people in jail and they pressurized them to give the knowledge. Finally they did not give everything, they gave something, which after thirty years or so, the Wright brothers could successfully fly the plane. There is a documentary on this. Some television people have done it, you can look into it. And there is a lot of description about Vimana. The word Vimana means aeroplane. If there is a word it must be in existence in the past. How from Sri Lanka, in one day, Rama went back to Ayodhya. It is not possible without a plane in those days. And all the dates are documented. But in the colonial days, some of the historians did not want to acknowledge this. So they tried to push it down. As Lord McCaulay wrote to Queen Victoria, unless you destroy the spiritual heritage of this country, you cannot rule this country. He wrote a letter to Queen Victoria, it is still available. Lord McCaulay when he came to India he travelled length and breadth of India, and he said this country is so rich, I couldn't find one beggar and one sick person in this country. And the cultural heritage is so strong, you can never rule this country unless you destroy the spiritual heritage of this country. So then they brought a number of startling rules. They first made a law, barring all architects to work. That's why they made Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. All the architects were asked not to work. So after the eighteenth century, there is not a single building made by Indian architects in all the British provinces. Then they put a bar on the weavers, so that they can bring all the clothes from Leicester and Birmingham. So there were all these colonial rules. And systematically, the Ayurveda system was banished. Because of one British soldier. In Indian when someone lost, they would cut a little bit of their nose, they would never kill because killing is wrong. The only way to show someone has been defeated is they would cut a little piece of the nose. when he came out of the Mysore kingdom, an Ayurvedic doctor caught hold of this soldier and in just three hours time he does plastic surgery, he fixes the nose back. This soldier on his return, writes to Queen Victoria, 'our country is far behind the medical science that is prevalent here, we must learn from the medical science here.' So there are many such documentation to prove that there was a lot of this knowledge that was available. And in those days without internet, without cellphone, Columbus tried to find India and found America! Why would he try to find India? That was a time when this knowledge was beyond Cambodia. Even today in Cambodia, huge temples are there. In Mahabharat, you must have heard of Kambhoj. That's Cambodia. Revival of this education is essential and its only been in the last two decades that Ayurveda has been revived. It's good scientists are rediscovering. Well whatever the past has been, they may know, they may not know, but what we need to do is take the good from wherever it is. Whether east, west, north or south, whether past or present, we should take the best. Every culture every civilization has something good, something great in them. We must take those things and be a global citizen. That's what I feel. The boundaries are all man-made, real boundaries don't exist. The whole planet is ours, we should think that and all its wealth is ours. Whether it is in Spanish, in Chinese, in Japanese, whatever language, whatever culture, it all belongs to us. That is real evolution. If u start feeling the planet is mine, everyone in this planet belongs to me, then you are moving in the right direction.

SRI SRI AT MANAVATHE

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar addresses all present at MANAVATHE - Karnataka Education Conference at the Art of Living International Ashram

This day-long conference is to highlight the importance of Human Values, Life Skills Training, Yoga and Meditation in the current education system.

ADVANCED COURSE AT KRISHNA'S LAND

KNOWLEDGE SHEET

Who am I ?
Keep asking yourself this question again and again – "Who am I?" This itself paves the way for going deeper into meditation. Just keep aside whatever you think of yourself or what you feel you are. This question cannot be answered through words. One who answers it through words does not truly know. This question is very important. So keep asking this question to yourself again and again – be it a hundred or a thousand times, over and over.

Then ask yourself, "Why am I?" I would say first you should know who you really are. Then think over why you are, and also why you are not. Think whether there is anyone for whom you are not (in existence).
You are not here to be troubled, you are not here to disturb others either. You are not here to simply eat, drink and sleep from one day to another. You are not here to gossip. So when you think deeply in this manner, you will slowly begin to understand why you are here. Start making a list of all the things you are NOT. Go on negating one (identity or label) thing after another that you are not. Then you will know why you are here, and that you are here to be useful and be of help to others around you, and for yourself as well.

When a few people get comfort and relief because of you, then the happiness and contentment that you get cannot be expressed in words at all.

SRI SRI AT SATSANG

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji in Satsang

20-Feb-2015 at

Bangalore Ashram

Ques: Is there any difference between tapas and tapasya?
#SriSri: It's the same thing. What does tapas mean? Endurance. Everybody will have to do this some time or another. And life is a tapas. Tapasya means you fix a goal and when you work towards that goal there are obstacles that come, having the endurance to go through these obstacles is tapasya. Mainitaning your equanimity your poise in adverse situations, that is tapasya.

Ques: Is there any rebirth?
#SriSri: If you go to psychologists, there is something called para-psychology. In all the clinics across the world, there is something called as regression therapy. Past life regression, they take your memory backward. If you do a Google search you will find a lot of evidence for that. Today there is no doubt that there is rebirth. You could've asked this question twenty five or thirty years ago. Today there are so many evidences. I know there is rebirth and I tell you yes there is! Our body goes back to the earth, the consciousness remains, the energy remains and it comes back.

Ques: Is it necessary to do the Gayatri Homa before the Trayambak Homa?
#SriSri: Before we do any homa, usually we start with the Gayatri Homa. We always start with 'Om' and Gayatri. It is said that Universally there was only one word first. That is 'Om'. Everything came out of 'Om', it exists in 'Om' and will go back to 'Om'. When 'Om' expanded it became 'So Hum'. When that expanded it became 'Guru Om', when that expanded it became 'Om Namah Shivayah', and again that expanded to become 'Om Namo Narayana'. So it kept expanding and then came the Gayatri Mantra. What is Gayatri Mantra? It says let our intellect be inspired by the Divine. Let our intellect be soaked in the Divine. It's a collective mantra. Let all our minds, intellect, be soaked in the supreme energy of bliss, of truth and of consciousness.

Ques: If there is nothing called soul mate, why do we celebrate Shivaratri the Union of Shakti and Purusha?
#SriSri:  Well, celebration is part of life. You take any excuse to celebrate. Every excuse is justified if you want to celebrate. Celebrate everything, every moment. See God is not a person sitting somewhere. The Vedas say God is Sat - truth, chit – consciousness and bliss. It's the energy, the supreme energy, by which everything else is made up of. Like all the ornaments are made up of gold, all the furniture is made up of wood. Like that this entire creation is made up of five elements. And that which is the cause of all the five elements is consciousness or energy. That energy is what everything is. If you study quantum physics and you study the Vedanta, you will find that it's the same thing! You put it in different words, that's all. It is absolutely the same. So today science has met spirituality. Science has married spirituality. And spirituality is old, from a long time and spirituality is new. That's it.

Ques: In all these pujas and yagnas, what is Your role and what is our role?
#SriSri: My role is to see that it is all happening and your role is to just enjoy it, be part of it! These are ancient knowledge that has somehow been lost. Or people practice it without knowing it, without understanding. At least some of these practices are kept alive from thousands of years and today it's a world heritage. We preserve it and present it to the world so that the world can benefit form it.

Ques: How to attain Bhakti(devotion)?
#SriSri: Bhakti means intense love. Love for the Divine. It is there in you. You don't need to try to attain it. You simply have to acknowledge it. It's like someone has their specs right above their heads and then you keep looking for your specs. And then someone says that it is right on top of your head and then you bring it down. So it is as simple as bringing your specs down, you identify of yes I am part of this Universal Spirit. We part of this Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, part of one human family. The world belongs to me, I belong to the world. Everyone is part of me, I am part of everyone. this realization, that is Bhakti. Bhakti is being grateful in life. Just think of all that you have received. Don't you feel grateful? That gratefulness turns into devotion. Never doubt your devotion! Don't say 'Oh maybe I don't have devotion'. If you don't have devotion you can't do any job. If anyone has excelled in any work, whatever work they are doing, that means they have love, they have devotion, they have dedication. Without that nobody can be successful.

Ques: In the shastras it is said that there are two signs of a Satguru. Could you please elaborate.
#SriSri: Not two, five. Five signs of a Guru is, 'Dukha kshaya', sorrow diminishes, 'Sukha aavirbhava' for no reason you feel happiness, lot of pleasure comes. 'Gyaan raksha',knowledge is preserved, 'Samriddhi' you will not feel lack of anything, contentment, lack diminishes and then 'Sarva samvardhan', talents come up. Those who have never written poems, they start writing poems. Those who don't know how to dance they start dancing.

Ques: How do rituals have a place in Vedanta? I was fascinated by the Shiva Diksha Puja.
#SriSri: In Shiva diksha puja, they write an 'Om' on the floor and the student needs to come and stand on the 'Om' and then they tell him 'See, your basis is Om', that means your origin is Om. Then they blindfold the child and bring them around and then they make them stand again on the Om and say you're origin is also Om and your existence is Om. Then they make the child see the Shiva mandal and they say that Shiva is in you and Om is in your whole body. They make them touch the heart chakra and all the different parts on the body. That is the diksha. The master says that now the Shiva tatva has become your atman, means your soul, it is a part of you. You realize that divinity is a part of you. And to get established in it, you chant. This is called 'Jeev diksha'. Jeev diksha means it goes with your spirit, it is nothing to do with your body but you spirit. Your spirit is soaked in Shiva. That is what is called Shiva diksha.

Ques: Films create a make-belief world and create an impact on society. Do puranas also do the same thing?
#SriSri: Yes, yes! Purana in fact means the modern. In other Indian language, purana means old. But in Sanskrit purana means new.. So in ancient days they created many puranas, it was a sort of new entertainment for people in those days.

Ques: What is the cause of jagat(the world)?
#SriSri: Eshwar(God).. Cause of all causes is Eshwar.

Ques: In the book 'Proof of Heaven', the author describes the all pervading sound of home. I also want to experience this, but I don't want to die.
#SriSri: You don't need to die to experience this! You need to just be still, meditate. One day everybody has to go, but you don't have to wait till that day to experience Om.

Ques: There is a young girl who is not focusing on her studies in spite of doing spiritual practices
#SriSri: Today's environment has become so polluted.. children do get influenced by the environment.  That is why it is not enough just to teach our own children, we have to influence all children. All the friend's of your kids, unless they are influenced, you cannot preserve the values of your kids alone. It is impossible. So we have to become a good uncle and aunt before you can become a good parent! Because the friends of your children, listen to you better than your own children. You have to spread the influence, else if the storm is too strong, the lamp will blow off.

Ques: Once you become a teacher, does your spiritual growth become faster?
#SriSri: No no, nothing like that. It's good once you become a teacher you can spread what you know to others, systematically. And that gives you enormous satisfaction because you are teaching, making so many people smile again from their hearts. Isn't that so? All the teachers? When you make other's smile, when you take away all their burdens, difficulties in their life, you make others feel so good. But it's not necessary everyone has to become teacher. You can do any seva and feel happy and make others happy.

Ques: I always feel shy to talk to you. I feel I can talk to you in person but in front of everyone.
#SriSri: I can see that you are feeling shy, it is very obvious! You know, this is personal only.  Satsang means, publically personal! And personally public. That is what satsang it. Isn't it? We are all like one family.

Ques: Can there be absolute freedom of expression, ever in the whole society, in the light of the killing in France.?
#SriSri: Life is a balance of discipline and freedom. In the name of freedom, sometimes we discard the discipline. That is not right. Someone's freedom cannot become someone else's pain. This is important. Someone says, my freedom is to chop of the head of people, whomsoever I like! That is not freedom! Twenty one Christians were slaughtered a few days ago. This is a heinous crime. And those people think it's their freedom to kill infidels. This is wrong. Similarly, hurting the sentiments of anyone, any religion is wrong.. You have no right to hurt the sentiment of other people. Freedom and discipline should go hand in hand. Or in the name of discipline, you cannot gag the press or the artist. They should be given the freedom also. And sometimes it's ok to make fun of anything, anybody.  You should not worry about it. When I went to Argentina, we had a huge gathering there. Lots of television channels made a spoof of it. They dressed a dwarf like Me, and he came to meet Me also! He had a small bottle and said that in that small bottle he was selling air or happiness or something. He said I am the real Ravi Shankar. I said Thank God, then you take over! Then I am free I can go on holidays. (laughter) So humour is humour, you have to honour humour. Humour can only be countered by humour, not with guns. You have to counter humour with humour  only.. Even war is an art. If the opponent has sword, only then you have to right to hold a sword. If the opponent has a mace, only then you have the right to hold a mace. So if the opponent is using words, you also can use only words, not guns. That is the correct war. Pen can only be countered by another pen, not by gun. That is a crime.

Q: How to bring world peace?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: First bring peace inside you then in family then World mein bhi ho hi jayega (will also get it).

GET ALL YOUR ANSWERS WITH GURUJI

Q: How to bridge Modern Science and the Ancient Systems?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: In India, in olden days we used to say 'swastha' which means, one who is established in oneself, one whose actions matches what he says. Only such a person can be considered to be healthy. If someone spoke something else but did something else, people would not blame him, he was just considered unwell.
In our country we never blamed a culprit, we considered them unwell from either a physical or mental level and treated them with yoga and Ayurvedic remedies.
These provisions were created for this purpose, so that a person can be wholly and completely healthy. A person can be considered wholly and completely healthy when he has commitment and a good character. And when he wants for others what he wants for himself.A very pleasant and committed mind set is a sign of health. Fortunately they are recognizing this fact world over: that happiness is a factor of health. If you are not happy there is something wrong.
In past decades we used to think that science is very rigid, but it is not so. Science is also a growing subject, an ever growing subject. Science is never complete, it can never be complete. If it is completed then it is dead. Science is always in its youth. A sign of youth is that it grows, and science is ever growing. Unfortunately the field of science was plagued by prejudice for a very long time, of course now it's changing. A very pleasant and committed mind set is a sign of good health.
At the Ayurvedic conference, the Ayurvedic doctors had a discussion on turmeric. They said turmeric is an ayostapni, which means it arrests aging and is an antioxidant. Ayurvedic doctors said that turmeric is very important, while allopathic doctors would not agree. They believed it is a superstition and turmeric has no value. Today there is a research which says that turmeric is the best anti-depressant. It has the quality of 19 important life-saving drugs. A latest research shows all of this. Now, what those Ayurvedic doctors were saying has been proved correct.
At the same time spirituality cannot afford to maintain superstitions. It should be open to debate, and not blindly followed just because it is written in the scriptures. It is necessary to see whether it is applicable in today's day and age. We should think on the reasons behind what was written. Science cannot afford to have prejudices as its ever growing. At the same time spirituality cannot afford to maintain superstitions. It should be open to debate.
In the scriptures it says that water should be filtered through a cloth before drinking it, so in many Jain homes you will see a cloth tied over the taps. There are many flies and insects that come and sit on that cloth and that create many other problems. So even the good water which come out of the cloth become impure. It is said that we should eat with our hands, but we have not thought about how we should do it. It is important that we understand why it has been written in the scriptures to eat with hands.
The ancient systems should be open to scrutiny, and scientific examination. We should look at it with a scientific temperament. We should neither discard it with prejudice nor follow it blindly with superstition. Find a middle path where you take both the old and the new and move forward. Just like how the roots of a tree are always old while the branches and leaves are new, life is also like that.

DAILY SUTRA

Don't let politics sway you away from the path. If you are afraid of politics you cannot be successful in the spiritual realm. You have to cross the barricade of politics. It is the test of your strength, commitment, and your focus. - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

GURU ONE LINERS

Q: What is Shiva Tattva?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: When you say, not this, not this, not this, and discard everything what remains, that is Shiva Tattva.

GET ALL YOUR ANSWERS WITH GURUJI

Q: Tell us the significance of 'Maha Shivaratri'.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Maha Shivaratri is the day when the Shiva Tattva touches the earth. The consciousness, the aura or the ethereal world which is always ten inches above the material ground, touches the earth element on the day of Maha Shivaratri. It is the wedding of the material with the spiritual. Shiva is the soul (of everything) – there is no difference between the soul and Shiva. Your true nature is Shiva, and Shiva is peace, infinity, beauty and the non-dual one. Ratri means 'to take refuge'. Shivaratri is taking refuge in Shiva (the soul). It is celebrating the Shiva Tatva within oneself. Ratri (which translates as night) is that which gives you rest, or peace. Three types of peace are needed:
Material peace
Mental peace and
Peace in the soul
If there is disturbance around you, you cannot be peaceful. You need peace in your environment. You also need peace in the body and mind, and you need peace in the soul. You may have peace in the atmosphere, you may enjoy good health, and you may have peace in the mind to a certain extent, but if the soul is restless, nothing can bring you comfort. So that peace is also essential. Only in the presence of all the three types of peace can there be complete peace. Without one, the other is incomplete.

Shivaratri is taking refuge in the divine consciousness which brings peace and solace to all layers of consciousness. So resting in the Shiva Tattva is Shivaratri. When the mind, intellect and ego rests in the divine that is the real rest, and the deepest rest (the complete peace). This is why it is very useful for people to meditate on this day.

Shivaratri is like a new year for a saadhak (seeker). It is considered as an auspicious day for spiritual growth and material attainment. The night on this day, when the constellations are in some particular position, is very auspicious for meditation. And so it is very useful for people to keep awake and meditate on Shivaratri. Take some fruits or some light easily digestible food and spend the day awake and meditate at night. You don't need to do meditation all night, just for some time.

KNOWLEDGE SHEET

Who is Shiva?
Shiva is the meditative aspect of the entire Universe. Shiva pervades the entire Universe. He is in every atom of the Universe.

Shiva is the one energy that manifests itself in endless forms. Albert Einstein once said, "Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It can only be changed from one form to another." That energy, which changes from one form to another, is called Shiva.

Shiva is that blissful and innocent consciousness that not only exists in every atom of the universe, but also in us. Celebrating the Shiva Tattva in oneself, is called Shivratri. Like sponge in water, when mind and bodies are in Shiva Tattva, wishes get fulfilled effortlessly.

"Ratri" means Night. Night is the time for rest and comfort. When all activities stop and everything becomes quiet and peaceful, the body goes to sleep. Shivaratri is a rest not only for the body, but also for the mind, intellect and ego.

Every individual needs to rest, and needs peace. There are three types of peace that one requires; one is material peace, if there is disturbance around you, one cannot sit and stay peaceful. One needs peace in your environment. The second is the peace in the body and mind. Third thing is peace in the soul. One may have peace in the atmosphere and may enjoy health in the body, to an extent peace in the mind, but if the soul is restless, nothing can comfort. So that peace is also essential. Only in the presence of all the three types of peace can there be complete peace. Without one, the other is incomplete. Shivaratri is transcendental, divine consciousness which brings solace to all layers of existence. Resting in Shiva Tattva, is called Shivratri.

Reasons For Survival Of The Hindu Religion

Hinduism is neither asceticism nor illusionism, neither polytheism nor pantheism. It is the synthesis of all types of religious experiences. It is a whole and complete view of life. It is characterised by wide toleration, deep humanity and high spiritual purpose. It is free from fanaticism. That is the reason why it has survived the attacks of the followers of some of the other great religions of the world.
No religion is so very elastic and tolerant like Hinduism. Hinduism is very stern and rigid regarding the fundamentals. It is very elastic in readjusting to the externals and non-essentials. That is the reason why it has succeeded in living through millennia.
The foundation of Hinduism has been laid on the bedrock of spiritual truths. The entire structure of Hindu life is built on eternal truths, the findings of the Hindu Rishis or seers. That is the reason why this structure has lasted through scores of centuries.

1.1.7     Shiva Obliges Brahma

Nandikeshwar continuing with the tale said:

"After according same status to Vishnuji as that of his own, Lord Shiva opened his third eye from it manifested 'Bhairav'. He ordered Bhairav to kill Brahmaji. Bhairav severed the fifth head of Lord Brahma with his sword. Brahmaji became very terrified. He was trembling in fear. Lord Vishnu felt pity on his condition and requested Lord Shiva to forgive him.

Lord Shiva then stopped Bhairav, but told Brahma.

"You spoke untruth with a desire to become worshippable. It is my curse that, you will not be worshipped by anybody. You will posses only four heads."

Brahmaji begged his forgiveness. Lord Shiva feeling pity on Brahmaji gave him a boon of being the presiding deity of all the yagya. Similarly the Ketaki flower also prohibited from being used during worship. But when Ketaki flower tendered his apology Shiva gave blessing that it would be fortunate to be offered to lord Vishnu during the worship.

THE FACTS OF HISTORY

India is the most tolerant country in the world. She has a very expansive heart. She includes all nations in the embrace of her love.

The Western nations are the descendents of the original Hindus or Aryans. They might have forgotten their old connections with the Aryans and Hindu culture. They might have forgotten all about their ancestors. But this cannot be effaced from the annals of history. Mother India, the repository of Hindu culture, cannot forget her children beyond the seas. They are always dear to her.
Hindu culture and Hindu civilisation were at their zenith in the days of yore. Greeks and Romans imitated the Hindus and absorbed Hindu thoughts. Even now Hindu culture and Hindu civilisation stand foremost in the world. No religion has produced so many great saints, sages, Yogins, Rishis, Maharshis, prophets, Acharyas, benefactors, heroes, poets, statesmen and kings as Hinduism. Each and every province of the country has produced intellectual giants, poets and saints. Even now India abounds in Rishis, philosophers, saints and high intellectuals. Even now she abounds in sages and great souls.
The Hindus had to undergo severe hardships and tortures. They had to face fierce battles and cruelties and yet they live today. Some mysterious power has preserved them. Some invisible force has protected them. That power will protect them for ever.

SHIV MAHA PURANA

1.1.6     Anaal-Stambh (The Pillar of Fire)

"Though Lord Shiva knew everything, but still feigning ignorance, he asked about the well beings of the world. The deities told him about the battle, fought between Brahmaji and Vishnuji."

"Lord Shiva then sent his one hundred Ganas to pacify both of them. He too went there accompanied by mother Parvati, boarded on a chariot. When Lord Shiva reached there, he saw that Brahmaji and Vishnuji were about to use their deadly weapons- Maheshwar and Pashupat respectively. Fearing the destruction, which these deadly weapons might have caused, Lord Shiva manifested himself in the form of 'Analstamba' (pillar of fire) between them. Brahmaji and Vishnuji had already released their weapons- Maheshwar and Pashupat. Both the weapons fell into that pillar of fire and got destroyed.

"Brahmaji and Vishnuji were very surprised to see the pillar of fire, which was so enormous in size that it reached the sky and penetrated down the earth. Vishnuji transformed himself into a boar and went to the 'Patal' (nether world) to find the base of that 'Pillar of fire'. But he was unsuccessful in his attempt and came back.

Similarly Brahmaji transformed himself into a swan and flew up in the sky to find its limit. While going through the aerial route he met a withered 'Ketaki' flowers, which had still some freshness and fragrance left in it."

"Lord Shiva smiled at the futile attempts of Shri Brahmaji and Vishnuji. As a result of his smile the Ketaki flower fell down from the branch. Ketaki flower told Brahmaji that he had been present there since the beginning of the creation, but was unable to know about the origin of that 'Pillar of fine'. The flower also advised Brahmaji against making any effort in that direction, as it would be of no use."

"Brahmaji then sought the help of Ketaki flower to give a false witness before lord Vishnu, that he (Brahmaji) had been successful in seeing the limit of that pillar of fire. Ketaki flower agreed. Both of them went to Vishnuji and Brahmaji told him that he had seen the limit of that Pillar of fire. Ketaki flower gave a witness. Vishnuji accepted the superiority of Brahmaji."

"Lord Shiva became very angry with Brahmaji. He proceeded to punish Brahmaji for his falsehood. Lord Vishnu requested Lord Shiva to spare the life of Brahmaji. Lord Shiva became pleased with Vishnuji and accorded him the same status as Hat of his own."

THE SPIRITUAL SOIL OF INDIA

India is the sacred land which has given birth to countless sages, Rishis, Yogins, saints and prophets. India is the land that has produced many Acharyas or spiritual preceptors like Sri Sankara and Sri Ramanuja; many saints like Kabir, Ramdas, Tukaram and Gauranga Mahaprabhu; many Yogins like Jnana Dev, Dattatreya andSadasiva Brahman; and many prophets like Buddha and Nanak. Buddha is our flesh and blood.
India is proud of Guru Govind Singh and Sivaji. India is proud of king Bhoja and Vikramaditya. India is proud of Sankara and Kabir. India is proud of Valmiki and Kalidasa. Krishna, Rama and all Avataras were born in India. How sacred is India! How sublime is India! The dust of Brindavan and Ayodhya, the land trodden by the sacred feet of Krishna and Rama, still purifies the heart of countless people. Even Jesus, during the missing period of His life, lived in Kashmir and learnt Yoga from the Indian Yogins. Glory to Mother India!
India is a spiritual country. India never conquered territories or annexed dominions. Military conquest is not her ambition. She wants her children to have Atma-Svarajya or Absolute Independence. She does not call upon them to rule over others. She wants them to have conquest over internal and external nature. She wants them to possess brilliant divine virtues, moral stamina and inner spiritual strength born of wisdom of the soul. Ahimsa is her weapon to have the spiritual conquest and the conquest of the minds of others.
People of India have Self-realisation as their goal. They do not, generally, bestow too much attention on material prosperity and advancement. They want Yoga or communion with the Supreme Being. They practise Ahimsa, Satya and Brahmacharya. They wish to enjoy the eternal bliss of the Absolute. They are always ready to renounce worldly possessions in order to possess or realise the inner Atman or Brahman. They will sacrifice anything and everything in order to attain the immortal Atman. They are always spiritual-minded.

India is the sacred land with several holy rivers and powerful spiritual vibrations. The hoary Himalayas attract the people of the whole world. It is a land peculiarly suitable for divine contemplation and Yogic practices. Every country has its own special attractive features. India is the land of Yogins and sages. This is the special attractive feature of India. This is the reason why people from America, England and all parts of the world come to India for the practice of Yoga.

.1.5     The Deities go to Kailash Mountain

Nandikeshwarji narrates the tale of battle between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu.

"Once while travelling lord Brahma reached the abode of Lord Vishnu. He saw Lord Vishnu. He saw lord Vishnu resting on Shesh-Nag and being attended by Garuda and other attendants. When Brahmaji saw that Vishnu did not get up to receive him, he became very angry. Very soon, Verbal dual erupted between them. It became so severe that a battle was fought between them, which continued for very long time. All the deities arrived from the heaven to watch the battle. They became very worried when they saw no sign of battle coming to an end. They decided to go to lord Shiva, to seek his help.

BRAHMA

SUNDAY STORIES 51
18.01.2015

 BRAHMA

Brahma is originally said to have five heads. The story goes that Brahma and Vishnu were competing for superiority when a column of light appeared in front of them. They decided that whoever reached either end of the column of light is to be accepted as superior. Vishnu assumed the form of a boar and dived down to the bottom whereas Brahma sought to reach the top of the ray of light. Neither could find the end of the ray.

Brahma, desperate at not finding the end of the ray, found a flower and asked the flower from where it was coming. The flower answered that it was just falling in the space. Brahma presented the flower as a false witness to claim that he had reached the top of the column of light. Shiva, upon learning this destroyed Brahma's one head that spoke this lie, and hence Brahma is left with four heads. Legend has that it was indeed Shiva who appeared before them as the ray of light.

Origin And Significance Of The Term

That part of the great Aryan race which migrated from Central Asia, through the mountain passes into India, settled first in the districts near the river Sindhu, now called the Indus, on the other side of the river. The Persians pronounced the word Sindhu as Hindu, and named their Aryan brethren Hindus. Hindu is only a corrupt form of Sindhu.

The Hindu Aryans spread themselves over the plains of the Ganga. Then the Persians gave the name Hindusthan, or abode of the Hindus, to the whole of those districts between Punjab and Benaras.(Latest historical researches have now proved that the Aryans did not come from outside India, but were the original inhabitants of India.)
The classical name for India which is used in Sanskrit literature is Bharata-Varsha or Bharata-Khanda, after the name of Bharata who ruled over a large extent of territory in days of yore. Manu’s name for the whole central region between the Himalayas and the Vindhya mountains is Aryavarta, Abode of the Aryans. Another name for the whole of India is Jambu-Dvipa. The Greeks gave the name Indu to the whole of this country. It was on account of this India became popular as the name of this country throughout Europe.

Hindu is not a mere name. This name Hindu is not only of geographical, but also of national and racial importance. The whole history of our nation from the very beginning is bound up with it. All our ideas and ideals are so intimately connected with it that it is difficult to give a simple definition of it. Poets, prophets and Avataras came to sing the praises and glory of this name. Rishis, sages and saints took their birth to compile the Sastras and Darsanas for this nation. Heroes and warriors have fought for its honour and laid down their very lives for it. Piety, nobility, generosity, philosophy, religious bent of mind, Yoga, religious tolerance, wisdom, devotion, renunciation, Self-realisation. Ahimsa, Satya and purity are associated with the name ‘Hindu’.

1.1.4     Greatness of Shiva Linga

According to Sutji, if a person is incapable of following the above mentioned three activities i.e. Shravan, Kirtan and Manan then he should worship the Shivalinga. Even by doing this he can attain liberation from all the bondages of the world.

Describing about the majesty of Shivalinga, Sutji says: "Lord Shiva is the manifestation of Almighty God (Brahma) himself and for this very reason he is known as NISHKAL. Because of his divine beauty, Shiva is called SAGUNA (God with form). The term SAGUNA is also expressed in another way, that is SAKAL. Shivalinga is worshipped since it symbolizes the form of Shiva. Lord Shiva is also considered to be NIRGUNA (without any qualities.)"

"In the first Kalpa of Swetvarah, a battle was fought between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu to prove their superiority. Lord Shiva manifested before arrogance. After that he also showed them his form in the shape of Shivalinga. From that day onwards the Shivalinga became famous."

MEANING OF THE WORD "PASHUPATI"

Q: In Nepal, Lord Shiva is worshiped in the form of Pashupati Nath. What is the meaning of the word 'Pashupati'?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Pashu (Hindi word for animal) means one that is tied down by something or is stuck in bondage. Paash is something like a rope; it is that somethingthat ties you down or restricts you. There are eight kinds of Paash and so there are eight kinds of Pashu tied by them. In English there is a saying, 'Man is a social animal'. So everyone is tied up or bonded to the world by some Paash or another, like greed, attachment etc. Lord Shiva is the lord of this entire creation that is tied by the eight kinds of ropes. So he is the master and lord of all living beings and creatures in this world.

In Nepal there is an orthodox custom of animal sacrifice. Do not go and offer any kind of sacrifices at the temple. The lord does not like that at all. Did you all know that? It is a great sin to offer sacrifice of another living being in the name of pleasing God. It is sheer ignorance. Today I would want to congratulate all our Art of Living teachers and volunteers for the great work they have been doing to bring an end to animal killing and animal sacrifices. I came to know that the rate of animal sacrifices has fallen by 40% or 60%. You must continue to spread awareness about this and educate more and more people. Tell them that if they do not have the capacity to bring another living creature into this world, then they also have no right to take away its life. If you can bring an innocent goat to life, then you have the right to take its life also. But when you do not have the power to give life to a goat, then you also have no right to take away its life. Every creature has the right to live. It is not prescribed anywhere in our scriptures to offer animal sacrifices to please God.

PROPER METHOD OF
1.1.3     Listening, Kirtan, Contemplation

SHRAVAN KIRTAN MANAN

Purification of the mind by the help of doing worship and chanting the name of God is called contemplation. Singing devotional songs in the form of stotra, or hymns of the vedas or even in one's own language is called Kirtan.

The above mentioned three activities are the supreme means to attain liberation.

WHO IS A HINDU

In a meeting of the Sanatana Dharma Sabha, Lokamanya Tilak said: "A Hindu is he who believes that the Vedas contain self-evident and axiomatic truths."
The Hindu Maha Sabha has given another definition: "A Hindu is one who believes in a religion which has originated in India."
"Those who burn the dead are Hindus." This is another definition given by some.
"He who protects the cows and the Brahmins is a Hindu." This is another definition given by some.
Some define: "A Hindu is one who regards India as his motherland and the most sacred spot on earth."
Some others define: "He who calls and considers himself a Hindu is a Hindu."
Some define: "He who accepts the Vedas, the Smritis, the Puranas and the Tantras as the basis of religion and of the rule of conduct, and believes in one Supreme God (Brahman), in the Law of Karma or retributive justice, and in reincarnation (Punarjanma), is a Hindu."
"He who follows the Vedic or Sanatana-Dharma is a Hindu." This is the definition by some.
"He who is a follower of the Vedanta is a Hindu." This is another definition given by some others.
"He who has perfect faith in the Law of Karma, the law of reincarnation Avatara, ancestor worship, Varnashrama Dharma, Vedas and existence of God, he who practises the instructions given in the Vedas with faith and earnestness, he who does Sandhya, Sraaddha, Pitri-Tarpana and the Pancha-Maha-Yajnas, he who follows the Varnashrama Dharmas, he who worships the Avataras and studies the Vedas, is a Hindu." This is the definition given by some highly cultured men. This is the only correct and complete definition.

SRI SRI ABOUT SHIV PURANA

Gurudev, In Shiva Purana it is said that anyone who worships Lord Shiva is freed from all sins. Does this mean that corruption begins at the top?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
No! Do you know what corruption is? Corruption is doing that which you don't wish to be done to you or to your kith and kin. You cannot link pooja (here meaning worshipping Lord Shiva) and corruption.
Pooja is a feeling that comes to you out of fullness. Like when a guest comes to your house, you come to the door and receive them. If someone very dear to you is coming to see you, don't you rush to the train station or the airport to receive them? Does it come out of a feeling of compulsion? You can tell them to call a taxi, but instead you take your vehicle to go and receive them. Why do you do that? What is that feeling? It cannot be called corruption. So pooja means that which comes out of fullness.
In Puranas, many things are written. I'm not an advocate of all the Puranas. Many of them are a means of expression. In fact, the word Purana means a new way of expressing.
The Hindi Purana and Sanskrit Purana have totally opposite meanings. In Hindi, Purana means old, and in Sanskrit Purana means very new or modern; it means a different way of expression. Don't call that as a corruption. God is not so stupid that He waits for you to break a coconut to give you a boon!
All the poojas you do are to express your fullness, not to please God. I think this is a very wrong concept in the world. We think we do things to please God; this is wrong understanding. People fast for many days so that they can please God. You fast to purify your body; you don't have to fast to please God. This is a wrong understanding

EMPHASIS ON PRACTICE

Hinduism provides spiritual food and Yoga Sadhana for all sorts of people to suit their temperaments, capacities, tastes, stages of spiritual development and conditions of life. It prescribes Yoga Sadhana even for a scavenger or a cobbler to attain God-realisation, while doing his ordinary avocation in the world. Hindu Yoga and Vedanta teachers lay great stress on self-restraint, Tapas, renunciation and practical Sadhana which is best calculated to control the mind and the senses and unfold the divinity or attain Self-realisation. Hinduism is not a religion of mere theories. It is eminently practical. In no religion you will find such a variety of practical Yoga practised and such sublime unique philosophy expounded. That is the reason why India is the only glorious land of sages, Rishis, Yogins and saints.
Religion is practical aspect of philosophy. Philosophy is rational aspect of religion. The philosophy of Hinduism is not arm-chair philosophy. It is not meant for intellectual curiosity and vain discussion. Hindu philosophy is a way of life. The philosopher of Hinduism seriously reflects after hearing the Srutis, does Atma-Vichara, constantly meditates, and then attains Self-realisation or Atma-Sakshatkara. Moksha is his goal. He attempts to attain Jivanmukti now and here.
Religion is spiritualisation of human life for a Hindu. Religious culture is really the culture of freedom for him. Religion governs all the departments of Hindu life. He must realise the freedom of the soul in every department of life. Religion affords the greatest scope for him for the culture of true freedom. Religion is the only way to him for the realisation of perfect freedom in life.
It is in India alone that every man knows something of philosophy. The cowherd who tends the cattle, the peasant who ploughs the fields, the boat-man who pulls at his oar, sing songs replete with philosophical truths. Even the barber repeats OM NAMAH SIVAYA, SIVOHAM before he takes up the razor. The Paramahamsa Sannyasins, the itinerant monks of Hinduism, have disseminated the highest of Vedanta from door to door. In exchange for a handful of rice, they have distributed from door to door, through religious songs, the priceless gems of Hindu religion and philosophy.

1.1.2     Proposition and Means

Sutji continued with his narration:-
"During the initial period of 'Svet Varah Kalp'. Six prominent sages collected near Triveni and started debating as to who was the greatest deity, among Brahma Vishnu and Mahesh. Their debate remained inconclusive, so they went to lord Brahma to seek the answer.

Lord Brahma told them:-

"O revered Sages! The source of Vishnu, Rudra all the deities including myself and all the other creations is none other Mahadeo. Union with the Shiva should be the objective of a man to attain that objective. Listening to the qualities of Lord Shiva, singing devotional songs in his praise and contemplating on him are the greatest means, which help to unite with Shiva."

THE GLORY OF VEDANTA & YOGA

Vedanta, or the philosophy of the Upanishads, is lofty, sublime and unique.
The Western philosophers have paid their tribute to the ancient seers of
the Upanishads. They have been amazed at the lofty heights scaled by them.
Schopenhauer studied the Upanishads and meditated on the thoughts of the
Upanishads just before going to bed. He said: "The Upanishads are the
solace of my life and they will be solace to me after my death also."
The Raja-Yoga system of Hinduism is also splendid and unique. The lessons
are immensely practical and highly instructive. No system of physical
exercise on the surface of the earth can compete with Hatha-Yoga.
Kundalini-Yoga is wonderful. Hence the Americans and Europeans are in
search of Hindu Sannyasins and Yogins. They visit the Himalayas frequently
in quest of Yoga teachers. Some are living under Hindu Yogins as disciples
and are practising Yoga. Many Europeans and Americans are even now Hindus
by faith and practice, though they are born Christians. They practise
Raja-Yoga and Vedanta

SHIV MAHA PURANA

This Purana consists of the following 7 Chapters:
1.1      Vidyeshwar Samhita
This Chapter contains 24 sections.
1.1.1     Sages Enquire
Viddyeshwar Samhita which is classified into twenty five chapters, has a narration in its first chapter which goes as follows-

Once upon a time, the sages were performing a yagya at Prayag kshetra. Sage Sutji came to know about this and arrived there. All the sages were very pleased to see him. They requested:-

"Lord! Though we have heard many tales from you regarding the man's benediction, but today we want to listen to something special. Because in this present era of Kali, when all the castes have forgotten about their respective duties we want to know is there any way to prevent the deterioration in the human values?"

Sutji replied:-

"O Great men! Your enquiry has great relevance in this era of Kali. I will certainly tell you about the way by the help of which a man can achieve benediction. Shivmahapuran contains the essence of Vedantic philosophy, which gives worldly pleasures as well as Salvation. Mere remembrance of it destroys all the sins of a man. One who studies the Rudra-Samhita attentively, his gravest of sins are destroyed instantaneously. One who studies Rudra-Samhita' silently, sitting in front of Bhairav-idol, all of his aspirations are fulfilled. A man gets liberated from the sin of killing a brahmin, if he studies Rudra Samhita while circulbulating around a Banyan tree."

"Kailash Samhita is even Superior than Rudra Samhita, as it elaborates upon the meaning of Omkar. Shivmahapuran is created by lord Shiva Himself. It contains twelve Samhitas which are - Viddyeshwar, Rudra, Vinayak, Uma, Matri, Ekadash-rudra, Kailash, Shat-rudra, Koti-rudra, Sahastra Koti, Vayaviya and Dharma."

"Initially it contained one lac shlokas but it was precised to twenty-four thousand shlokas by sage Vyas. The present ShivPuran is the fourth one which consists of seven Samhitas. The earlier three Shivpuranas are unavailable. The scientific analysis of the Vedantic mysteries are the main subject of this divine Shivpuran. The study of Shivpuran helps a man to attain Dharma, Artha, Kaam and Moksha.
